The local skating rink held a Tiny Tots skating morning for kids under 5.  They have little skates for rent and you can bring ride on toys to use on the rink.  They also have some painting activities as well.  Claire was very excited about the skates until she got out on the floor.  She just wanted to take off but of course doesn't have the skill for that.  She was very uncomfortable with almost falling backwards whenever she tried to move too fast, so we were done with skates pretty quickly.  She still wants to go again though.

Trying skating for the first time
Enjoying ride-on toys much more than skates!

Claire's new room and big girl bed

With a new baby on the way, it was time to convert my craft room slash dump all room into a real bedroom.  First came the paint decisions.  I decided on a soft yellow with a purple band at the top.  Unfortunately the paint chip samples didn't really match with what the paint actually looked like on the wall.  Thus resulting in the picture below: 4 or 5 different yellow samples on the wall before I found the right one!

Once the yellow was decided on, it was time for purple.  I liked the first one I got well enough, so I just went with it!

Once the paint was done it was time to fill up the room!  We got a new dresser from Ikea and Claire's big girl bed from Rooms to Go.  Curtains were a whole other decision process!  I finally decided on something simple from Pottery Barn Kids.

Claire's first night in her big girl bed was May 15th.  Daddy put her to bed and all went well.  Until she fell out of bed in the middle of the night!  So the experiment to see if she could stay in bed failed.  Up went the bed rail.

The transition was pretty good.  There were a few bumps in the road.  We had an increase in middle of the night wakings.  She also started getting up earlier in the morning.  And where she previously would have stayed in bed chatting to herself, now she immediately got of bed and stood at the door crying.  She finally settled in though and starting sleeping through the night again.

Grampy and Maine

My grandfather, John N. Simpson, passed away on April 24th at the age of 83.  He was a resident of Maine but spent his last few months at a nursing home down here in Georgia so he could be close to many of his remaining family members.  My parents stopped by to see him every day and my siblings and I swung by whenever we were in the area.  But he had a huge number of people who cared about him in Maine, so his memorial service was held in Maine in May.

He was a remarkable man.  He held degrees in ministry and psychology and devoted his life to serving God as a pastor in multiple churches and hospital settings.  He was very kind-hearted and generous.  He could talk to anyone about anything but was also an excellent listener, truly interested in learning more about the person he was talking to.  He was also a pack rat, bordering on hoarding, which made cleaning out his house quite a task.  Gotta have some quirks to balance out all the other good traits I guess.  :)

My dad drove up to Maine early to begin the process of cleaning out the house.  It took multiple 20 and 30 yard dumpsters to accomplish the task.  My mom and I flew up with Claire on Wed. May 8th, which was also Claire's last day of school.  So Jeff and I went to her little party at school, left a few minutes, and drove straight to the airport so Claire and I could make our flight.  We helped out where we could, getting things ready for the service and working an impromptu yard sale to get rid of some of the better items Grampy had stored away.  Family members arrived at varying times on Weds, Thurs, and Friday.  Jeff flew in Friday afternoon.  That evening we had a nice dinner with various extended family members from all sides.

That night, Jeff came down with an awful stomach bug.  So Saturday morning I was at CVS trying to pick up prescriptions he called in for himself to try to relieve some of the misery.  Fortunately there was plenty of family around to get Claire ready for the memorial service that morning as I took care of Jeff and then scrambled to get myself ready.

The service itself, held May 11th, was wonderfully done. It was led by the pastor at the church my grandfather had been attending since his retirement.  He and my grandfather had formed a friendship so it was very personal.  My dad also spoke, giving a wonderful speech that captured who my grandfather was and his contributions to all those around him.  The ladies of the church put on a fabulous luncheon.  After the service, immediate family went to the cemetery to inter the remains next to my grandmother and aunt.  The rain held off just long enough.  Although he is greatly missed, the morning was a perfect tribute to a special man.

That night we had a big party at my aunt's with lobster and a shrimp boil and lots of yumminess. Jeff recovered enough to visit a little bit.  The next day was Mother's Day.  We celebrated with lunch on the water in York, Maine with a big group of family.  Here are a few pictures we snapped by the ocean.  Then we did a little outlet shopping with my mom and siblings while my aunt took the kiddos back to her house for naps.

Despite the sad reason for our visit, it was a nice trip to Maine.

Early 2 and development

I covered Claire's language explosion in another post.  Here are other areas of development for Claire's first few months of being 2!

We have some new concepts:
Possessive - somewhere along the way she picked up the concept of possessive (Claire's, mama's, mine)

Counting -  We are making some progress here.  1,2,3,6,7,8 is typical.  Just can't get 4 and 5 yet!  She can also count/identify quantities of 1, 2, and sometimes 3.

Time out - She is understanding the concept of time out and also the verbal label.  She isn't 100% with her understanding of the process yet.  Especially if you threaten with time out in an attempt to get her to comply.  She'll either say that she wants to go to timeout or put herself there and start crying before I've actually told her to go to timeout.  She's pretty good with behavior and following directions, for a 2 year old, so we don't have to use timeout too much.  Maybe a few times a week.  Sometimes it's 3 times in one day and then none at all for days.  Just depends on her mood and how many demands we place on her.

Fears:
Our fearless little girl has become a bit of a scaredy cat! I know it's due to her developing little mind being more aware of the world and all the unknown things out there.  She is very tuned into any little noise and wants to know what it is.  She doesn't like loud, unexpected noises and really doesn't like thunder.  She'll say "I no like it thunder."  She also freaks out a little bit with bugs.  There was one day she wouldn't go outside because there was a bee flying around the deck.  I had to carry her out past the deck. The fluorescent light in our closet makes a buzzing sound that she doesn't like.  A few flies that got into our house terrorize her.  If she heard or saw one, she'd cover her eyes and whine.  I think may have been precipitated by something biting her ear on a trip to the botanic garden.  We aren't sure what happened, but she started crying suddenly and grabbing her ear and later that day she had a little red spot on the top of her ear.  But even dead bugs floating in the pool give her pause.

She is still pretty fearless physically as far as climbing.  She is timid around water though, which is a double edged sword.  I don't have to worry too much about her running right into the water, but it's also hard to get her into a pool.

Some of her recent interests:
More tunnel/airplane - on our many trips down to our parents' houses we go under "tunnels" (overpasses) and pass by the airport.  She loves finding the airplanes in the sky but always asks for more.

She is loving music and singing.  For a while her favorite was "bum ba way" (Lion sleeps tonight).  Jeff would sing it for her or play it on the computer or his phone.  Of course, she would always ask for more.  We sing her songs at bedtime.  She always want more!  But my favorite is her developing singing skills.  She now has enough language skills to attempt to sing herself!  It is so adorable!  She is also better at recognizing tunes she knows than I am!

She also is developing some pretend play skills.  She will feed her babies or animals or pretend cook in her kitchen.  One day she was feeding a stuffed sheep and asked it "Iss good Baa?"

Swimming:
We did a few weeks of swimming lessons at the Y.  The first lesson went great!  She did great getting into the water, did all the requested tasks, followed directions, no screaming or crying like a few others.  It went a little downhill after that.  I guess the novelty wore off.  She started being more resistant to getting into the water to practice a skill, yelling "back to the wall, back to the wall."  When sitting on the wall awaiting instructions, she didn't want to sit with the other kids.  She wanted to run on the pool deck.  So it could be a little frustrating at times.  But she did practice some skills.  She liked the Humpty Dumpty rhyme we sang to go into the pool.  Except she said "bumpty bumpty." She didn't want to blow bubbles after the first day, but she would practice kicking and "ice cream scoop" arms.  I really just wanted her to be comfortable in the water and not be afraid to get in.  We had pretty good success on that front, or so I thought.

Food:
We've had some developments in the eating category.  She is still a good eater but exhibiting some changing tastes.  She's added a few "kid foods" to the like category that she previously refused: chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese.  She's also become a shrimp lover!  Unfortunately she has stopped eating some things she used to, like various squashes and oatmeal.  She has taken a couple bites of egg without spitting it out but still proclaims "I no like it egg!"

Bed transitions:
On April 1st we changed her crib to a toddler bed.  On May 15th we put her in a new big girl bed in a new room.  There were some ups and downs with both changes, but overall the transitions went better than I had expected.

Diapering and potty training:
Claire has become resistant to diaper changes for the most part.  Which is great fun, especially when very pregnant!  I have learned a trick though.  I ask her to bring a stuffed animal over for a diaper change and then can get her to lay down too.

We also have had some potty success!  We aren't fully potty training.  Just following her lead in interest in sitting on the potty.  Sometimes she's eager to sit on it, other times she refuses.  Jeff is better about pushing the issue a bit and convincing her to do it.  I don't have the energy for that so I will let it go if she says she doesn't want to.  We started out with both a little potty and a potty ring for the big potty.  At first she only liked the little one.  Now she is fine with either option.

So far we've had numerous pees on the potty.  She doesn't really get the concept of holding her pee but if you catch her at the right time, she understands putting her pee pee in the potty.  We've had one accidental poop on the potty.  On April 30, I put her on the little potty before bed so she could pee and surprise!  She had poop instead.  But if we catch her in the act of pooping she does not want to do it on the potty.  So we still have a ways to go.  But it's better than when she was afraid of the potty!

Potty time!

32 weeks!

Where does the time go?

32 weeks

Poor second child, getting the short end of the stick before she is even born.  With Claire, the whole blog was about her.  This baby gets just a few posts of her own.  She does have ways to get her revenge though.  She is sucking up all my energy and motivation so that Claire is left with a tired Mommy who doesn't feel like doing much.

Let's review what's going on with this pregnancy:

1.  How am I feeling?
Pretty good.  A little more discomfort than I remember at this point with Claire.  But that is probably because I'm trying to entertain and care for a toddler rather than sitting at work.  And said toddler likes to climb on me and elbow my belly.  My sleep is starting to go down hill a little bit in the past week or two.  It's harder to fall asleep and stay asleep, especially starting around 5 or 6 in the morning.  Summer is just getting started but I can tell the hot weather is going to be a challenge.  But overall, I'm pretty happy with how my body manages a pregnancy.  I am getting mild episodes of heartburn again, especially with too much food or with chocolate, which is very unfair!

2.  What's baby up to?
It's hard to tell what she's up to in there.  I have less time to pay attention to her movements so I haven't gotten a pattern figured out.  And Claire was head down pretty early but I think this one is still flipping and flopping around.  At my last appointment 2 weeks ago, the midwife wasn't really sure what position baby was in.  But just like Claire, this one likes to get moving in the evening once I relax on the couch and again when I lay down for the night.  Claire was usually pretty quiet overnight, even if I was up in the middle of the night.  This one makes her presence known.  It's not anything so crazy that it's keeping me up, just more of a "hey, is it time to be up?" kind of thing.

3.  How about preparations for the new baby?
We've gotten Claire out of the crib, into her own bed, and into a new room.  So that's the biggest hurdle out of the way.  That's leaves the crib and nursery open for baby girl #2.  We are keeping the furniture and wall color the same.  I've picked up some new bedding pieces and some new artwork that are waiting to be put up.  I'm currently in the process of organizing and packing away Claire's wardrobe from the past year, so the room is occupied with all of that debris.  Once that is cleared up, I'll work on getting the room cleaned and redecorated.  I did get the closet emptied out and a few new clothing acquisitions just for baby girl hung up.  I also need to drag out the bin of newborn clothes and see what we have that is appropriate for July weather.  I need to make a list of all the small things we might need, but there's nothing big except maybe a double stroller.

4. Does baby have a name?
The short answer is not yet. The long answer is that Jeff has chosen a first name that he wants to use.  I'm still deciding if I'm ready to commit to it.  Some days I'm ready to say yes, other days I'm in love with a completely different name, and some day I don't love anything at all.  We do not have a middle name yet.

Early 2's and language

What a crazy time for a kid's development!  I love this age for that reason.  (I could do without the tantrums though).  The biggest change is in Claire's language.  So this post will contains lots of snippets of her language because I find it so cute and interesting and want to have a record for the future.  At her two-year check up, she had 2 word sentences and just a few 3 word sentences.  Now less than 3 months later we regularly have 5 word sentences.

Here's a sampling of her phrases and new words over the past few months
