Ellie at 3 weeks!

(Written Friday, August 16th)

Elizabeth is 3 weeks old today!  It feels like time has flown by, but also like she has been here with us much longer!

Squeezing into a few last newborn outfits

She came out of that newborn honeymoon phase a week or so ago as she started to "wake up" and some fussiness started up.  But having survived Claire's super fussy newborn days, this seems like a piece of cake so far.  Ellie is much more easily soothed and sleeps and eats better than Claire did.

The past few days Ellie seems to have developed a bit of a routine.  She is mostly eating every 3 hours during the day.  Her nursing sessions are quite a bit longer because of this, which isn't a big deal if we are at home.  She still tends to fall asleep while eating but isn't always full when that happens.  So it's hard to know when she is really done, or just needs a little rest before coming back for more.  Most days she sleeps for a chunk in the afternoon, during Claire's nap time.  (Not always continuously, sometimes she needs a little rocking or some time with the pacifier).  But this is SO helpful in letting mommy have a break or maybe even a nap.  Hopefully she will keep it up since Daddy is now back to work and mommy will be on her own.  Of course, the one day that mommy was home alone and desperately wanted a nap, neither daughter wanted to sleep!

At night is her "fussy" time when she wants to be held more, have a little more movement, and cluster feed for a little extra calories and little extra comfort.  I spend a lot of time with her on the couch between 8 and 10.  She will have one last nursing session between 9:30 and 10:30 before going out for good.  She then sleeps until sometime between 2:30 and 3:30 when she wakes up to eat again.  On a good night she'll go right back to sleep.  Other nights she'll sleep for 30 minutes and then wake up fussing to eat again, or maybe just to be rocked with a pacifier.  Then she is good for another 3 or 4 hours.  Last night for example, she ate at 10:30, 2:30, 6:00, and then slept in until 9:00.  Pretty darn good for a 3 week old!!

Ellie's second week

On what would have been our first full weekend home with both girls (Aug 3-4), my parents stole Claire away.  And I happily let her go!  Just a few days and the tantrums were getting to me.

During our weekend alone with Elizabeth, Jeff and I went out to lunch at Chili's, snuggled with Elizabeth, went to church, and then had dinner with all my family at my parents house.  I was so thankful to have a little extra time to spend to adjust and recover with only Ellie to worry about.

Claire came back home with us on Sunday and we experienced our first week with two parents and two girls.  We survived!  Having Jeff around was a huge, huge sanity saver!

Here are a few pictures from that week.

Just when I've had enough of parenthood and am ready to go hide in my room, I look in the playroom to see this sight.  Sure to bring a smile to this mommy's face!

Fun with hats!

Elizabeth's first week: at home

What we were up to the rest of Ellie's first week:
Saturday night:
We took it easy at home for our first night.  Grammi made us some yummy chicken pot pie at Brandi's request.  It was one of my favorite meals from after Claire was born so it seemed appropriate to have again.  :)

Chilling at home
Sunday:
The Connells came to visit!  Chris and LeeAnn brought Kiersten and Kerrington over to meet their new cousin.  In typical kid fashion, they were much more interested in our playroom than the baby.  They were quite intrigued by Ellie's umbilical cord though. :)

Uncle Chris and Aunt LeeAnn
Monday:
Claire came home after being with Grandma and Grandpa all weekend.  Grandma brought her up in the late morning and stayed for lunch and snuggles with Ellie.  That afternoon Mommy and Daddy took Ellie with them on an exciting outing to Target and Home Depot!  Grammi stayed home with Claire while she napped.

Claire may love "Home Peepo" but Ellie isn't convinced

Tuesday:
Elizabeth had her first doctor's appointment.  She weighed 7 pounds, the same as what she had dropped to in the hospital.  They were satisfied that she had maintained that but wanted us back in a few days for another weight check.  Everything else looked good.  The NP was particularly fond of the word "perfect" so Ellie's collar bones were perfect!  And her heart sounded perfect!

That evening we were ready to get out of the house for a bit so we all took a trip to our favorite frozen yogurt place for a yummy treat.

Wednesday (July 31st):
This would have been my induction day if Elizabeth had decided she was too cozy to come out.  Crazy!  I was very glad to have a 5 day old newborn instead of still being pregnant!

In the morning we all went to Costco, picked up a few things at Babies R Us and then had lunch at Sweet Tomatoes.  Aunt Jamie came to visit that evening.  She had been busy with a cruise, and visiting family in Florida, and work so it was her first time meeting Ellie.

Thursday:
Jeff took Claire to run some errands and then entertained her at home while Grammi and I did more work on putting up the decal I bought for Elizabeth's wall.  I could Jeff's patience was running thin as he was quite happy when we decided to call it quits for lunch time.  In the afternoon, Jeff went to help Dave and Karen move into their new place!

Sleepy time!
Friday:
Elizabeth had her weight check Friday morning, a week after being born.  She was up to 7 pounds, 9 ounces!!  Which meant she gained 9 ounces between Tuesday and Friday.  Much more than the ounce a day they were looking for!  She had surpassed her birth weight so we didn't have to worry so much about making sure she didn't go too long without eating.  While I was at the office, I asked about Ellie's white tongue.  The nurse got the NP to quickly check for us.  She thought it was probably thrush and gave us a prescription for that.  So the quick weight check took a lot longer than planned.

We eventually got going and Elizabeth, Grammi, and I drove to a local consignment sale to hunt up a few baby bargains.  That evening Grammi made us dinner and then took Claire home with her for the weekend.

Ellie's habits in her first week:
In short, we will say that God answered our prayers for an easier baby! (so far)  Thank goodness!

For the first few days she had her days and night a little mixed up.  She wanted to be up at night and in the morning and sleep all afternoon.  Fortunately, she soon became much kinder to us at night.

For her first night at home, I decided to try having her in our room.  I put the pack n play by our bed for her to sleep in.  That way I didn't have to get out of bed to feed her and could maybe doze a little while she was eating.  These are the times she ate that night: 10:30, 11:50, 2:40, 4:08, 5:33, 6:30, 9.    Who knows if she was really hungry all those times.  I think I probably just tried to feed any time she made noise.  A long night!

After that I decided the rooming in business just doesn't work for us.  It was too dark in our room to be able to see what I was doing.  I had to leave the room to change diapers anyway.  And I was too aware of her every little noise.  So into her room she went the next night.

On Sunday, she ate about every 2 hours during the day and otherwise slept the day away.  That night she ate at 10:30, 12:30, 4:15, 7:30.  Much better!

Monday's daytime feedings were variable, anywhere from 1-3 hours.  Monday night she ate at: 11, 12:30, 1, 4:45, 5:30, 6:30, 9.  Not quite as nice.  But we were figuring out what miss Ellie wanted to do.  She would fall asleep after nursing on one side and wouldn't be roused.  So I'd lay her down to sleep but she would wake up shortly there after to eat some more.

Tuesday she was eating anywhere from 1-3 hours again.  Tuesday night I tried feeding her from one side, waking her up with a diaper change, and then offering the other side.  That was pretty successful.  She ate at 10:45, 2:45, 3:30, and 8.  There were a few times she fussed after eating Monday and Tuesday night that I sent Jeff in to deal with her or when Grammi came in to help.

Wednesday night she settled into a pattern she has kept up.  She cluster feeds in the evening and has one last session between 9:30 and 10:30.  Then she sleeps for a few hours until 2:30 or 3:30.  She goes another 3-4 hours.  So that night it looked like: 10:15, 2:30, 6:45, 8:15.

So during Mommy's sleep time Ellie is usually up to eat once or twice.  Not too bad, especially if she goes right back to sleep afterwards!  Of course some nights, she'll wake up to fuss 30 minutes after eating or at some random point during the night.  Sometimes she will go back to sleep on her own (usually just as Jeff or I are getting up to tend to her).  Other times she needs some help getting back to sleep.

How we were adjusting to it all:
Elizabeth has been so much easier than Claire that life seems pretty rosy in comparison  As far as Mommy's feelings go, this has been a much better newborn experience.  I can now see why people actually like newborns!  We got to experience that lovely baby honeymoon, where the sweet, snuggly baby pretty much just sleeps and eats.  With a less demanding baby, I was able to get more sleep and take naps.  And my physical recovery was so much easier that it made my mental state much improved too.  From the moment of delivery, I just felt better physically and emotionally and that has kept up.  Jeff having 4 weeks off instead of 4 days makes a big difference as well!  And Grammi around for the first week helped too.  That left one person per child plus an extra to handle cooking, cleaning, etc.  Since Claire, I've thought it really takes at 3 adults to manage life with a baby!  :)

Claire's adjustment was different than I expected.  I expected some obvious jealousy or resentment of the baby.  But she acts wonderfully toward Elizabeth.  Loves to hold her and touch her and says "Aw, I love her!"  But there was deterioration in her behavior in other areas.  Her tantrums increased and her frustration tolerance went down.  She was very irritable.  It really seemed to kick in the week or two before Elizabeth arrived.  So it's hard to say what is the normal terrible two's and what is a reaction to the new baby.  I think having Jeff around changed the daily rhythm enough to throw her off a bit too.  For example, she was used to mommy getting her up in the morning.  Suddenly having Daddy do it every day with a different way of doing things was probably a challenge for a our very routine oriented little girl!

Sweet big sister!

Ellie's first week: in the hospital

Elizabeth's first day of life was pretty calm once the business of being born was taken care of.  She nursed for a little shortly after she was born.  And again a few hours later.  Then she proceeded to sleep all afternoon!

Ellie was born in the wee hours of Friday morning.  Due to some delays getting Ellie's blood work okayed by the pediatrician, we didn't make it up to a mother/baby room before nurse shift change at  7 a.m., so we got to hang out in the labor and delivery room for an extra few hours.  So even though I desperately wanted to sleep after being awake all night, it wasn't meant to be.  I couldn't drift off in the bright room with the uncertainty of when we would be moved.  At least they didn't completely forget about me like when Claire was born!

Once we got into a room, we had some visitors.  Brandi's dad came by around 9 or 10 to meet his new grand baby.  And Jeff's dad came by around lunchtime.  The NP from the pediatrician's office came by in the morning to check out Elizabeth.  She gave her the seal of approval, even after changing a poopy diaper just as Ellie decided to poop again!  Poop squirting out all over the place! All told, Ellie pooped 9 times in her first day!  Jeff and Grammi both went home for naps and to meet the pest control guy who was supposed to take care of some bees in our bushes.  He was quite late but fortunately Grammi was there to meet him.

The first night was a little reminiscent of our first night with Claire, but not nearly as difficult.  Claire cried for a long time in the middle of the night until we finally fell asleep during some side lying nursing (for an hour and half!).  Elizabeth similarly spent over an hour in the same position.  And she was more of a fusser than a screamer and much easier soothed.  She didn't like being in the bassinet thing and much preferred laying next to someone.  So she took turns sleeping beside me and Jeff for the night.

Saturday, Ellie's second day, was a whirlwind of activity.  A photographer came by in the morning to try to take some pictures for us.  But the pediatrician on call came in just after her.  He gave Elizabeth a quick check and gave us the go ahead to take her home that day if we wanted.  Then the photographer came back and tried to get some pictures, but Ellie was hungry and cranky so she was going to come back later.  Then most of our immediate family arrived to meet Elizabeth.  Jeff's sister, his brother and his wife, my brother and his wife, my mom, and Jeff's parent and Claire were all there.  Claire was a little overwhelmed by the hospital environment and all the people.  She liked looking at and holding her new baby sister until Ellie started to cry.  Claire got a panicked look on her face and frantically asked to get down off of the bed.  She perked up with all the presents though!  She helped mommy open some presents and even got a few presents herself.  Elizabeth had brought Claire a big sister present with some play-doh, a nightgown, and a special big girl Minnie Mouse cup.  Claire immediately became enamored with her new cup and proceeded to carry it everywhere.

The midwife on call came in while everyone was around.  After a few questions for me and some quick instructions, she gave me the okay to be discharged if I wanted.  I could have chosen to stay until the next day but thought we'd probably be going home that evening.  But then everything happened quickly and we were cleared to go by lunchtime!  I got a little panicky about leaving so quickly and needed a little quiet time to recharge after having everyone visit.  Plus, we needed to finish our pictures.  With lunch time rolling around, everyone headed out and I shooed Jeff off to have lunch with his parents and Claire so that I could have some alone time.  After some food and some alone time to decompress,  felt much calmer.  I ready to go home once Jeff got back from lunch.  And so, the three of us came home to our quiet house, mercifully absent of people who wanted to take my temperature or blood pressure!

Elizabeth's birth story

In the days before and after Ellie's due date, I tried to get to bed early each night.  I felt this pressure to get to sleep early so that I would have some rest if labor started in the middle of the night.

So the evening of Thursday, July 25th was no different.  I got in bed really early to relieve some discomfort and read for a while.  Around 9:30 I started feeling some cramping in my abdomen.  It was a new sensation.  The cramps were short, caused only minor discomfort, and followed each other fairly rapidly.  That lasted for maybe half an hour.  That subsided and I felt some pressure like I had to pee.  Which I did, multiple times.  At some point I felt some wetness and thought, hmm did my water break or did I just pee a little bit?  So I got up and headed to the bathroom.  No fluid gushed out and I peed while in the bathroom, so I figured that it was just pee.  But I made note of the time just in case and figured we'd see what happened.
Around 10 or 10:30 I turned off the light to try to go to sleep.  Shortly thereafter I felt something that I thought might possibly be labeled a contraction.  About 15 minutes later, I felt another one.  I got even more suspicious.  Jeff came up to bed around 11 or so.  I was still getting up to pee a lot, so eventually he asked me if I was ok.  I said yes, but I was really thinking "I'm pretty sure I'm in labor but I don't want to say it out loud in case things fizzle out."  But it wasn't too long later that I said "You didn't really want to get any sleep tonight did you?"  And when he asked why I said "I think we are having a baby tonight!"

The contractions went from 15 to 12 to 7 minutes apart very quickly.  Meaning two contractions were 15 minutes apart, and then next was in 12 minutes and the next in 7 minutes.  They started off very mild and ramped up VERY quickly.  So at 11:30 I'm finally sure these are contractions and this thing is happening.  By midnight, I'm looking for my rice sock and my exercise ball to sit on and my relaxation tracks.  But in the meantime, I'm visiting the bathroom 4 times in an hour.  So I was never able to settle into one spot, get somewhat comfortable, and let the relaxation thing do it's work.  It just happened too fast.  Just before 1 a.m. we called our moms to have them head up to our house (1 hour, 15 minute drive).  Jeff's mom to come stay with Claire and my mom to come be with me during labor.  45 minutes later we have to call them to say to meet us at the hospital instead!

At 1:30 I'm not sure I can wait for Jeff's mom to get to our house.  As much as I didn't want to wake up Claire, I was in some significant discomfort and the contractions were close together. So I call the midwife on call.  Well, Jeff does but she asks to talk to me and I'm the middle of a contraction.  She doesn't ask me the questions I'm expecting, just says "what's going on?"  So I tell her I'm in labor with contractions every 3-5 minutes (which was probably untrue, it was probably more like every 2-3 but I too busy to time them at that point).  She asks how long that has been going on and I say 40-45 minutes.  She tells me that they like to have it be an hour before coming in to the hospital.

That doesn't really work for me.  So I just say "well, it will take us about 20 minutes to get there, so we are going to head in now."  And she just says ok.  I found out later that I sounded "too calm" on the phone, so she didn't realize how advanced labor was.

So Jeff goes to get Claire up and load her in the car while I round up my last minute stuff and the diaper bag.  We head off to the hospital.  I have my headphones on, breathing, trying to relax into it.  Jeff is trying to drive quickly but safely. Claire is chatting away in the back seat telling Jeff about the moon and red lights.  Jeff got to a red light at a main intersection with a long light.  As he is pulling up to a stop I think "oh, please just stop to check traffic and then go through it!"  He comes to a stop, looks each direction, and kept on going.  Yes!

We get to the hospital just after 2 am.  We park in the 15 minute dropoff area in front of hospital and meet Jeff's mom there to get Claire.  My mom was just walking in too.  The security guard asks if I need a wheelchair.  I decline and opt to walk because I am in a hurry to get to L&D.  And I thought walking myself would be faster.  Unfortunately I underestimated the length of the walk.  It seemed a very long way to those purple tower elevators.  I was trying to power through but had to stop once or twice for a contraction.

Finally, finally I get up to the third floor to check in.  They send us to complete some intake paperwork. What???  *#$@#$%#!  What was the point of mailing in that paperwork I filled out months ago?  I was not impressed!

The lady is trying to go over things with me and hands me stuff to sign.  I think I say "just a minute."  I'm leaning over onto the desk and then have to stand up and brace my hands on the corner of the desk to manage the contractions.  Things wouldn't let up enough for me to even sign my name.  Finally, she suggests that my spouse signs for me.  Oh, that's an option?  Yes, let's do that.  I think I just nodded.  At some point she finally says "Are you ok?  You don't look too good.  You can go ahead to triage while your husband finishes here."  Say no more!  I'm out of here.

I head to triage where the nurse gives me a gown to put on and leaves me to change. I think I have to go to the bathroom, but am incorrect.  Laboring while trying to use the bathroom is no fun.  I leave my clothes in a heap on the bathroom floor because I can't even manage to pick them up.  I get the gown on, have my mom help me close it up and ask her to pick up my things.  She helps me get all settled on the bed.

Eventually Jeff finishes the paperwork and comes in.  My mom has to leave at that point because there can only be one person.  And we just sit there for a while. And sit.  I ask Jeff to open the door so they know we are ready.  Finally I ask him to go out there and ask what the heck we are waiting for!

The nurse or tech or whatever finally comes in to check my progress, monitor the baby and whatever else they needed to do (that part is a little hazy).  She checks me and notes that my water is broken
and that I am at 7 cm.  As she is checking, but before she sees how dilated I am, she comments "I think we will be staying to have a baby tonight!"  And I think a swear filled version of no duh!  Of course we will be staying.  And then I remember that lots of people come in while in early labor and get sent home.  And that until she checks my cervix she doesn't really have any good concept of how far along I am because she is not the one experiencing the pain!

She asks if I want an epidural.  All thoughts of trying for an unmedicated birth have fled and I say YES!  At some point I have the thought that you hear that people pass out when the pain gets to bad and it would be nice if I could go ahead and pass out.  Just for a little bit.  Just a little bit of relief please.  I inquire how long it will take to get the epidural and she tells me probably less than 30 minutes.  Ok, 30 minutes.  That's my goal.  Make it through the next 30 minutes.  She tries to put a needle into my forearm for the IV and doesn't get it. She tries for a bit and even puts in a little fluid to "float it in."  Which hurts a lot and makes me pretty mad at her.  Eventually she just puts in my hand.  I had a big sore bruise on my forearm for a good week.

We get moved into a room and they start the antibiotics I'm supposed to have because I'm group B strep positive.  I think it's supposed to take about 20 minutes for it all to get into me.  And of course there's no way we are meeting the ideal of having the antibiotics fully administered at least 4 hours before the baby is born.  Soon the anesthieologist comes in to give the epidural.  I think there was a little glow and a hallelujah chorus as he walked in.  Much better bedside manner than the guy that did my epidural with Claire.  I hear him ask about a sticker for the chart.  He is informed that there is none since "she just rolled in less than an hour ago, already at 7-8 cm."

Sidenote:  While laboring, I've noticed that it hurts less if I kind of "push" down while contracting. And I feel gushes of fluid come out each time I do that.  So I have an inkling that I'm pretty far dilated but don't say anything because I wanted that epidural!

Jeff had been giving me counterpressure on my back while I was laboring.  But he had to move when they were placing the epidural.  So he comes around to my front and I'm not sure how I'm going to make it through without that small relief I was getting from him shoving his fingers into my lower back. Desperate for something, I take his hand to squeeze.  I tried to be mindful about not crushing his fingers so hopefully I didn't grip too hard.  I'm shaking my head like a wet dog and breathing very loudly trying to hang in there.

They get the epidural placed and get me situated.  After a few minutes the nurse asks how I'm doing and if I'm feeling any relief.  I say I'm feeling some relief but a lot of pressure in my butt.  And she  so she says "Ok!  I'm going to check you now."  And sure enough I'm fully dilated and ready to push.  She calls the midwife to come up and has me do some practice pushes in the meantime.  Unlike last time, I can feel the contractions and the urge to push.  So we practice a little bit and with her feedback quickly figure out what is effective and what is not.  The nurses comments that I'm one of the best pushers she's ever seen.  I feel unreasonable pride at this statement but reply "oh, you tell that to everyone!"  And she firmly states that no she does not.  My head swells up with pride.  But while we are doing that, the baby's heartbeat start to decelerate during each contraction.  The midwife comes in and we get down to business.  It's a little tense but the medical staff seem serious but not overly concerned yet.  So I try not to worry too much and focus on getting her out.  The midwife was trying to help stretch things so I wouldn't tear (but I didn't know that) and since it was stinging pretty bad, at one point I remember saying "Ow! Ouch! Ow ow OW!!"  And she says "oh sorry, I was trying to make sure you didn't tear."  Well, if she had told me that before she started I might have been a little more tolerant!  After about 10 minutes of pushing through about a half dozen contractions, Elizabeth Amelia entered the world!  4:11 a.m. on July 26th, 2013.  Less than 2 hours after I arrived at the hospital.

After her head comes out, I hear them exclaim "body cord! body cord!" Then she is fully out and they put her up on my stomach.  I note that she is pretty blue and say as much.  They ask if they can take her away to clean her up and get her pinked up.  I wonder to myself why they are even asking and what they are waiting for, but appreciate the consideration of trying to give me the feeling of control.

So they take her to the side and start working on her.  And I can't see a thing that they are doing.  I get stitched up.  Only a "little first degree tear.  Just a little one" says the midwife cheerfully.  I feel quite a bit of the stitching up process and one of the nurses even comments "I don't think you got your money's worth out of that epidural!"  There is small talk about how the midwife almost missed the main event. Finally they bring my little Elizabeth over to me for snuggling!

I don't recall the exact sequence of events after that, but eventually she was weighed and we got to do skin-to-skin and let her nurse for a little while.  Then we just hung out in the delivery room for long time until we were able to go up to a mother and baby room.

Overdue and off to the zoo

Well, we hit 40 weeks and kept right on going. Tuesday July 23rd came and went with no baby to show for it.  Here's the 40 week belly shot.

Due date!  40 weeks pregnant

I had an appointment the next day, on Wednesday, to check up on baby.  That morning we were trying to decide what to do with ourselves for the morning when Jeff suggested the zoo.  I said ok before I really thought it through.  As I was getting ready I questioned whether it was the best idea to walk around in the heat.  But then I thought maybe some exercise couldn't hurt in getting things moving.  So we slowly made our way around the zoo one last time as a family of three, with plenty of resting on my part!

Daddy handled most Claire wrangling duties

Claire is getting braver at the petting zoo!

Getting just close enough

That afternoon I headed in for my 40 week, 1 day appointment.  I had an ultrasound first to check on baby and check my fluid levels and whatever else they were looking at.  The tech took some measurements to estimate baby's weight.  Her guess: 7 lbs, 10 oz!  I saw the midwife afterward and she commented that everything was looking good, fluid levels were good and baby's weight/size weren't too big.  When I commented that my first was 6 lbs 3 oz, she said "Oh, so this estimate is a little scary for you?" and she was darn right!  Considering that it's just an estimate and it can go a pound or so in either direction.  Here's a picture from the ultrasound.  The tech tried to get a 3D shot of her face for us. Baby girl had her hand in the way, as well as the cord and placenta.  So here's the best she could do.  Amongst all the grayish-white stuff, you can spy a little nose in the middle there with most of a mouth below and one up higher up (with the cord right next to it).

3D ultrasound of baby's face

I had made no progress with cervical dilation from the previous week.  Since everything looked good I was cleared to continue gestating at home, waiting for baby to make her grand debut.  I did schedule an induction for the next week just in case.  I didn't really want to be induced and wanted to let things happen naturally.  But I also knew Jeff's days off were ticking away and I really wanted her to come in July rather than August, so I scheduled the induction for a week later on Wednesday July 31st.

38 weeks and puppet shows!

38 weeks
I hit 38 weeks on July 9th.  So things could happen at anytime now.  Yikes!  I do not enjoy feeling like a walking time bomb, ready to pop at any second.  Baby did turn head down around 34 or 35 weeks, so that's good news!  Everything is progressing along as it should, so we are just waiting for when baby girl decides it's time to make her grand entrance.  Jeff has one more string of shifts to complete before starting a month off, so we'd like her to hang in there until he finishes up on the 16th.  I know Jeff and his dad would be pleased if she came on the 16th since that is Jeff's dad's birthday.  I think I'd be okay with that too.  :)

The same day I hit 38 weeks, Jeff and I took Claire to a puppet show.  We went to see the Cat in the Hat and the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta.  We weren't sure how she would do but figured we'd be okay in a theater full of young kids.  Jeff summed up the experience quite well with "well, that could have gone worse."  Claire was restless and loud, didn't want to sit for long, was bumping the people in front of us and belted out "Twinkle, Twinkle" at one point, but she did seem to enjoy herself.

July 4th, 2013

Once again, Jeff had to work the 4th.  I imagine this will often be the case since he has to put in his fair share of holidays and this one is not a high priority.  Claire and I managed to entertain ourselves with lots of family fun though.

On the 3rd we drove down to stay with my parents and have dinner with them and my bro and SIL and niece.  The next morning we ended up having breakfast with the same crew at Cracker Barrel.  Mmm, biscuits!  Claire loves playing on the rocking chairs there!  And she and my niece played a rousing game of "checkers" (aka, bang these round things together and/or throw them on the ground!).

We spent the afternoon with the Schulzes.  In addition to celebrating the holiday, we celebrated my BIL Dave's birthday.  A Yankee Doodle baby.  It was certainly no hardship for Claire and I to help everyone enjoy Dave's favorite cookie cake!  Although the blue and red Cubs themed frosting made quite a mess on Claire's face and hands!  The rain ruined plans for Claire and her cousins to enjoy pool time in the yard but we all still managed to enjoy ourselves.  Claire is getting old enough to actually play with the older girls.  I'm still not quite comfortable letting her go unsupervised with them upstairs for very long, but it's nice to see that possibility on the horizon.

Cousin love!

Happy 4th of July!

Just a few weeks left...maybe!

34 weeks - June 11
Claire gets in on the photo action

36 weeks - June 25th

The end of this second pregnancy is drawing near.  Which brings mixed feelings.  Excitement to meet our new little person.  Anxiety about labor and dealing with a potentially fussy newborn.  Relief at being done with the discomforts of pregnancy.  Sadness at already being at the end of a second pregnancy.

I'm at 37 weeks and change. So I'm full term and the baby could come anytime in the next month! And man, the end is kicking my butt more than it did with Claire.  With Claire I was mostly just exhausted, getting up early every morning for work and not sleeping terribly well at night.  This time I'm getting a little more sleep but the false labor activity has really ramped up.  On July 3rd, things were so crazy I briefly thought this baby might be trying to share a July 4th birthday with her uncle Dave.  But fortunately a little water and rest calmed things down.  Hopefully all the discomfort is doing a little work to make the real labor process easier and faster!

On the plus side, the summer weather here in Atlanta has been kind to me.  Temperatures have been cooler than usual for the most part.  We've had a ton of rain recently but that's fine with me!  Keeps the temperature down and makes it ok to laze around inside all day.  It does make it harder to wear Claire out so that she will nap.  And she seems to have decided that now is a great time to skip napping and instead just play in her room.  Awful timing for her to give up her nap if that's what she is trying to do, but at least she will play quietly.  Unfortunately she still needs that nap most days, as she is irritable and always on the edge of a meltdown by late afternoon if she doesn't sleep.  I'm thinking a little tweaking of her nighttime sleep schedule might help.  I just have to get myself up early enough to get her up earlier.  No small feat there!

In other news, I think we are settled on a name!  I've agreed to Jeff's front runner for a first name.  He told me that he didn't really care about the middle name so I've been mulling that one over for a while.  I think I finally made a decision.  So baby girl finally has a name!  We will save the big reveal for once she arrives!
