July 4th celebrations

On July 4th Jeff had to work.  Of course.  Penance for having Easter and Memorial day off.  Can't have 'em all, at least in his line of work.  So Claire and I spent the day hanging with our family.  First we hit the neighborhood pool with Grammi and Paaps.

Then after Claire's nap, we hightailed it down towards Atlanta to meet up with some Schulze's to celebrate Jeff's brother Dave's birthday.  We joined Dave and his wife Karen and both sets of their parents at the Cheesecake factory.   If only I had picture or video of Claire when the desserts came out.  Her eyes lit up.  They widened as she stared at the cheesecake.  She leaned forward eagerly.  And when Grandpa shared some whipped cream, a pleased "mmm" sound.  And then when he shared some actual cheesecake a very pleasantly surprised and pleased "mmm. Mmm mmm." as she frantically signed for more.  Then after dinner I let her run off some energy outside the restaurant before sticking her back in the car.  I tried to get some shots of her patriotic outfit while chasing her around.

Cheesecake!

Hey, come back...

Stand up.   Don't grab the bark....

Ah, finally....

Hey, watch out..

Come back!

The weekend after July 4th was a busy one.  Saturday we headed up to Jeff's sister's house to get together with the Schulze's.  A late celebration of the fourth and Dave's birthday.  And just to see everyone.  We headed to the pool in their neighborhood and then ate too much yummy food and cookie cake.

Then on Sunday Claire and I went to the farmer's market and the zoo with my mom and sister.  The farmer's market in Grant Park in Atlanta is pretty cool.  Lots of great food for breakfast or lunch plus fruits, veggies, and meats.  We had some pastries for breakfast and picked up some vietnamese BBQ sandwiches for lunch.  Then we headed to Zoo Atlanta.

Lumps and bumps

Claire made 4 visits to the doctor in 8 days, thanks to some mysterious lumps, bumps, and rashes.

The first issue was a swollen lump in her groin area, discovered on Sunday June 24th.  You can see it in the picture below.  (Her tummy is on the left, left thigh on the upper right of the picture).  Multiple people thought it might be a hernia. So nothing serious but the thought of possible surgery for our little pumpkin was daunting.  Once we were back in Atlanta we visited the pediatrician to find out.  It had gotten much smaller by Wednesday when we went in.  The PA told us that it was two swollen lymph nodes.  That, combined with a rash she had on her back and sides suggested possibly a little viral infection.  Since it was already much improved, we were advised to watch it and went on our merry way.

Fast forward to Sunday July 1st.  A few red bumps that I thought were bug bites have grown to nickel to quarter sized red spots.  She has three, one on her head and one on the side of both knees.  I consider taking Claire to the doctor again.  Monday morning she wakes up with one spot gone from her knee and a new spot on her elbow.  And they look like the pictures below.

Head

Elbow

Knee
Ok, definitely taking her in!  The doctor suspects Lyme disease given the target/bullseye shape especially in the one on her head.  After hearing that we had been playing in grassy fields in Maine he is even more suspicious.  Since the treatment (antibiotics) is not painful or invasive, he decided to go ahead with it.  So we left with a prescription for 20 days of amoxicillin.  Claire's first antibiotic!

Then Tuesday morning, she woke up with more bumps.

4 bumps along her forehead

Large lump next to the original rash

Another lump next to the elbow rash

More spots on her leg
Spots all over her head and legs, a few on her arms, a rashy spot in her ear, and a red bump on her lip.  Some internet research indicated that Lyme rashes could stick around for a while.  The thought of Claire walking around with all these spots for weeks saddened me.  But then I began to question whether these bumps were actually Lyme disease.  Most of them didn't look like the ones the day before.  And a few were swollen lumps that were hot to the touch.  I hemmed and hawed about taking her back in.  I didn't want to be THAT mom.  We were just there the day before!  So I took the middle ground and left a message for the triage nurse at the pedi office.  I figured, let them tell me if I need to come in.  But a little more than an hour later I was driving myself a little crazy with concern.  I should have just made an appointment!  Jeff was upstairs napping after a night shift.  I finally convinced myself that it was worth waking him up to take a look.  He was groggy but was able to communicate that he wasn't too concerned. So I was able to relax a little.   The triage nurse finally called back 2.5 hours after I called in.  She got some quick details about the bumps, relayed them to the doctor and informed us that he wanted us to come in.

So we went back in Tuesday afternoon.  We saw the PA who was perplexed.  She went to get the doctor.  We could hear him in the hallway on his way in talking about med reactions and what other antibiotic they could use.  So he was suspecting a reaction to the amoxicillin.  Until he saw Claire.  He just plopped down on his stool with a "huh?" kind of look on his face.  He took a closer look but no answers magically came to him.  So he referred us to a dermatologist.  We got the go ahead to do some Benadryl and to keep going with the amoxicillin.

Either the Benadryl really helped or the antibiotic kicked in later that day.  Claire's spots started looking a lot better.  The redness really faded.  Fortunately we had the pictures to share with the dermatologist.  He didn't really think it was Lyme.  And he trained in Pennsylvania so he saw plenty.  But since it was a possibility he wanted us to stay on the antibiotic.  He mentioned that he could biopsy the rash to check for Lyme, but it's not a great test for it and he saw no reason to put a 16 month old through a biopsy.  He really thought it might just be her body overreacting to some insect bites. He really wasn't concerned at all once we said she had been acting herself.  He prescribed us a steroid to apply to help with itching.  Which we didn't fill.  Jeff felt that since we hadn't even tried hydrocortisone yet, we didn't need to go even stronger.  And he also thought that the doc might have prescribed it to make us feel better, like we had gotten more out of th appointment than "nope, just bug bites, have a good day!"

It was nice to know it wasn't anything overly concerning, even if we didn't have a definitive answer.

And it really did start looking better.  Here's Claire on July 6th, the day after the derm appointment.

Much less red than before

Small lump and barely red

Bumps gone or faded
So to review, here's our doctor visits and the resulting diagnoses.

6/27 - pediatrician - swollen lymph node
7/2 - pediatrician - Lyme disease
7/3 - pediatrician - ???
7/5 - dermatologist - possible Lyme disease but probably bug bites

Crazy!!

New England weddings

Claire spent half of her 15th month in New England.  We had two weddings to attend on back to back weekends.  Our college friend Ian got married on Father's day and my cousin Darryl got married the next weekend (June 23rd).

Jeff, Claire, and I flew up on Friday the 15th.  We got Little Miss Busy her own her seat so we could strap her into her car seat for the flight.  Absolutely the right decision.  It was a little rough because she didn't fall asleep for her nap until 3.  That was about 2 hours behind schedule and about 30 minutes before we landed. So she was cranky for much of the flight.  (We learned later that she just needs to be left alone to cry for a few minutes before passing out.  We kept trying to appease and entertain her.)

We stayed with our friends Sally and Nate for the weekend.  They made us a nice grilled meal and we went our for ice cream Friday night.  Saturday morning we went for a walk and then drove north to drop Claire off with my parents.  She wasn't allowed at the wedding on Sunday and my parents took her early so we could have a kid-free night with our friends.  (And so Grammi and Paaps could have more Claire time!)  And why were my parents there?  They flew up to Maine for the family wedding a week early so they could spend Father's day with their own dads.

Saturday evening Jeff and I got to head into Boston with friends from college.  We wandered around Quincy Market, the waterfront and the North End, just like college days.  I kept trying to pretend that I was back in college.  It didn't work!  I couldn't pretend away that whole little person in our lives even for a few minutes.  :)

We had an awesome time getting our pizza fix at Pizzeria Regina and finally finding a bakery without a huge line at Bova's.  Mmm, giant lobster tail!  (The delicious cream horn like pastry, not the crustacean).  We rounded out the night with some board game fun back at Sally and Nate's.

Sunday we acted like lazy bums until it was time for Ian and Kristen's wedding.  A lovely affair in the Amesbury/Newburyport area.  It was great to see a bunch of our college friends again.  Kristin and Ian were an adorably happy couple!

Monday we headed up to Maine to spend time with my relatives. My grandfather got Jeff and I a special rate for a hotel room right on the beach that night.  So we had quiet evening to ourselves. Then Jeff had to head back on Tuesday for work.  The rest of us continued to eat, drink, and be merry!  We took Claire to the Wells and Ogunquit beaches.  She loved it (the first day at least).  We got ice cream a few times, which she also loved!

Lemme have some of that!

A little golf to pass the time
Friday we loaded up and headed to Rhode Island/Connecticut for the wedding.  The rehearsal dinner on Friday was an informal backyard BBQ.  Apparently it ended with couches being thrown on the bonfire.  Claire and I missed that excitement since we headed back to the hotel early for her bedtime.  I was able to snag one s'more before we left though!

The wedding on Saturday was at 2.  Which doesn't work with Claire's naptime from 1-3.  So we hung back at the hotel until after she got up.  From the pictures, it looks like we missed a beautiful ceremony.  At the reception, all Claire wanted to do was tear up the dance floor! She definitely stole her share of the spotlight. She also became infatuated with a boy in a hat and with the table cameras.

Let's get this party started!

Everyone except Claire, Grammi, and I left by Sunday.  The three of us headed back to Atlanta on Tuesday the 26th.  On Monday morning, my mom, aunt, and grandfather headed to northern Maine to visit my grandmother's grave and to see my great uncle.  Claire couldn't handle all that driving so instead we got to spend time with my friend Kate.  She and her husband Kyle are friends from college and live in Portland, ME.  Kate gave us a quick tour of their apartment, let us see the bunnies and kitties at the animal shelter she works at, and then showed us some of Portland.  We went to a playground right by the water and then had pizza on Congress street.  It was a very lovely morning.  And I didn't take a single darned picture!

And of course, no Maine trip would be complete without going out to breakfast at least once.  So we squeezed that in on Tuesday morning on our way to the airport.  A great way to see everyone one last time.

15 months

Claire turned 15 months old on May 24th.  She is a feisty little darling, full of energy and cuteness.  She learns new things by the day, so it's difficult to list it all.  It's been a great age.  She is able to play independently for a bit and feed herself a meal.  That gives mommy a little break from a cling-on baby.  But she's still learning new things and awed by the workings of the world.  It's a true joy to watch her experience the world around her.

Some of the fun developments of the month:

Kisses - Claire is very weird with kisses.  She has long mastered blowing a kiss and is getting very liberal with them.  She can hold court in the grocery store with her royal wave and kisses thrown around like crazy.  But actual kisses are a different story!  She rarely ever did that drooly open mouth kiss that young babies are famous for.  For the past few months, whenever you asked for a kiss, she would bow her head so you could kiss her forehead!  Within the past 2 months, she began randomly giving real kisses to inanimate objects.  The stool by the garage door, Jeff's backpack, a toy--all got kisses.  The she progressed to sometimes kissing my arm or leg, just out of blue while I was sitting quietly.  So now inanimate objects and body parts can get kisses.  I like to joke that she has problems with intimacy.

Yoga - While my sister was staying with us, she taught Claire a little yoga.  Claire liked to help Jamie do some stretches.  If Jamie would do downward facing dog, Claire would run to sit under her.  She would scoot up close to Jamie's face and use her hand to lift her leg up like she was trying to kick Jamie in the face or make her smell her toes.  Jamie would stretch her leg by holding one out to the side.  Claire would imitate by lifting her leg.  Claire's favorite was ab exercises. As Jamie sat on the floor, Claire would stand between her legs and hold on as Claire lifted her up and down during leg lifts.

Dancing - Auntie Jamie also taught Claire some dance moves.  She can "shake it" (bounce her fists up and down) and drop it like it's hot (bend her legs up and down).  And while not a dance move she also learned to throw a deuce (hold up 2 fingers and say Deuces!).  Claire loves music and shaking her little booty.

Pull toys - Claire is beginning to develop this particular skill.  She never really got the concept of pull toys before.  Now she is beginning to catch on.  She also is figuring out how to use her toy vacuum. But rather than just push the vacuum continuously across the room, she push and pulls it back and forth quickly.  I assume that's mimicking what I look like when vacuuming.

Vocabulary - Her vocabulary is expanding at an exponential rate.  Here's an incomplete list.

Words: Hi, Bye, Night night (nah nah), Mama, Dada, Auntie, Audrey, Milk, Water, Up, Down, All done, Uh oh, Book (gook), Ball (bah), Bubbles, Baby, Cheese, No no,
Sign: More, Eat, Milk
Sounds: Moo, Woof woof, Meow, Baa, Quack quack, Doot Doot (tweet tweet), Snuffling like a pig

Of course, to balance all the sunshine and roses, she is continuing to develop her little stubborn streak.  She's starting to test some limits (like climbing on the coffee table!) and tantrums are a part of a daily life.  The severity of the tantrums run from minor verbal protest to epic tantrum where she cannot be calmed for a good 10-15 minutes.  She's had 3 of those "epic tantrums" as I call them in her short life.  They are sad and scary for mommy because her anger is short and she then becomes distraught.  She seeks out comfort, but then refuses it.

14 months

14 month cutie!

This month much is the same as the last month.  Feeding and sleeping habits are still the same.  Here are some of the newest developments:

End of the car misery?
I noticed after we returned from our trip to Sedona that Claire was doing better in the car.  And I was hoping that maybe we'd just gotten through a bad phase of being unhappy in the car and things would be much better.  Alas, that is not the case.  Things are better, but she can still get quite unhappy at times.  At least it's not all the time anymore I guess.

Teeth!
6 bottom teeth and 2 top teeth are completely through.  Another big top one is coming through on her left side.  The ones on top that should be next to her 2 front teeth haven't made an appearance.  So I guess we're doing things a little different than the normal order.  (According to Aunt Jamie, who is staying with us while she does a pediatric rotation in her physical assistant training)

New cousin!
My brother and SIL had their baby girl on April 28th.  So Claire has a new little cousin.  She's not very impressed.  And very jealous when mommy or daddy hold baby Audrey.

I'm not so sure about this!

Pointing!
Finally the child has learned to point!  I read somewhere that this is typically mastered around 9 months.  So we're only 5 months behind schedule.  Ha!

Talking on the phone-
This is hilarious!  Claire has begun pretending to talk on the phone.  She'll take a phone, smartphone, or even a credit card, hold it up to her ear and babble away.

Hair!
Claire finally has just enough hair to clip a bow into.  She won't leave it there very long though.

First bow!

Forget the bow!  I want to go outside!

Tub time
We got through the weird bath issues she developed last month.  She was resisting baths anywhere besides our house.  And sometimes she was a little hesitant at home too.  Jeff found out that she did better if you put her in the tub first and then started the water.  We forgot our little tub at Grammi's house so Claire had her first bath in the big girl tub this month. We've since go back to the little tub she since she likes to stand up and run around in the big tub.

And finally a few extra pictures from this month
En garde!  I will get you with my carrot sword!
